Rainy Days- need light!

I had an engagement session yesterday (3/22/10) at THE LINC with huge Eagles fans Katie & Kevin. The weather was less than cooperating but I needed to make this a successful session regardless! Answer? THE LIGHT CADDY! I actually found yet another easy tip to make my life easier. I buckled my KATA bag around the center of THE LIGHT CADDY and had easy access to my second body and lenses!

I have to be honest and say I hear from other Photographers who are undecided on purchasing a LIGHT CADDY, they say- "It looks like a Golf Bag" , to which I say "yes it Does, but it simply WORKS!" This bag does just WORK- you can go ahead and think whatever you want, but I am going to continue to work more efficiently and easily.

Canon 7D review

My first impression of the New Canon EOS 7D were good. The build feels very good. It is slightly larger than the 40D (slightly) I did order the BG-E7 grip (on order with Adorama) to feel more complete, plus give me a vertical shutter button.

The images are very nice and the AF is very accurate. I noticed while using the zone AF (on portraiture) that two of the af squares zoned in on my subjects eyes and they were pin sharp. I was very pleased with that (as opposed to just focusing on the closest thing to the lens- the nose)

The image quality was at least the same as the 40D- weird how an 18MP camera can only do marginally better than a 10MP but I have never been dissatisfied with my 40D's.

I think the price on this camera is adequate. Of course I wish it were in the same price as the 40D- 50D's but it is worthy of the extra cost from what I can see so far.

The new viewfinder is a very nice upgrade. It uses the same eyecup as the 1D series camera's if that gives you any indication of it's size.

The Mount was tight- So it feels like you are getting a nice seal when you mount your lenses.

The HD video mode is nice to have and I will need to experiment with that more and hope to be able to utilize it on my engagement and lifestyle sessions.

For the negatives-

The delete button is in the same spot as the playback button on my 40D's so I find my self hitting it every time. Luckily you can't delete the images unless you are already in playback and you would of course have to hit ok to actually delete, but still that is too close for comfort.

The on off sitch is now on the left hand side- that screws me up too because I am sued to doing that with my right hand.

The light button (that turns on the LCD light so you can see what your settings are in a dark room) has been moved also and that is a little hard to get used to as well-

Other than that, I am pretty excited about this new camera and will get a chance to really check it out on Saturday for a wedding.

Using the Light Caddy

Carrying the Light Caddy onto the beach for a shoot. I was able to use my off camera flash easily with the help of The Light Caddy. My gear stayed free of sand and was safe from being knocked over in spite of being a very windy day. I was even able to grab a quick shot while I was working my way down to where the groomsmen were waiting.

The Light Caddy enabled me to bring all my gear to the beach to use without sacrificing time. It was a very bright sunny day out and I wanted to be able to get the rich sky in the background without sacrificing the exposure on the subjects. I was even able to carry a lens pouch attached to my Light Caddy in case I needed it!

Here is a clear cut reason why off camera flash is more desirable for weddings. It took me literally seconds to put one flash behind the group at the other end of the tube and set the other light stand up in front of the group. With THE LIGHT CADDY you don't have to waste valuable time assembling your gear, it is already together and ready for action. With the LIGH CADDY on it's kickstand, the bag is on a 45 degree angle making it super easy and quick, not to mention STURDY- to get your gear out and back in. In this type of situation, the 45 degree angle actually was a necessity since the shark tube had a low clearance.
My assistant shot the on camera picture, I shot the off camera- what a difference a little light makes, huh?
